Transported through natural ecosystems, sand is a material formed from fragments originating across the world. Within its composition, matter is interconnected through countless substances, environments, and forms of existence. Provenance began as a photographic exploration of coexistence between humanity and the natural world. The project follows a prism as a symbolic object representing both life and human-made infrastructure. Through refraction, the prism reveals a reality in which human production and industry reshape Earth’s natural materials into systems of construction.

Throughout the performance and photographic process, a prism is placed within various environmental conditions to reflect the complex relationship between people and the resources they consume. Existing as both an artificial object and a foreign presence within nature, the prism embodies the tension between human creation and the natural world.

Provenance examines humanity’s use and transformation of natural materials while also acknowledging the shared existence between people and the Earth’s resources — highlighting our ability to alter, manipulate, and redefine the environment around us.
